World Nomads is travel insurance specially designed by travelers for travelers. It is the best choice for anyone facing a long trip outside of Europe, whether for pleasure or work.

But it’s also perfect for the more adventurous traveler because, unlike other companies, it also offers coverage for many extreme sports.

World Nomads offers two main packages: Standard and Explorer. In the Explorer policy, the limits are usually higher or in some cases unlimited, and provide greater coverage.

For any problem, emergency assistance is available 24/7.

World Nomads provides insurance cover mainly for the following cases:

  • health in motion
  • Sanitary repatriation
  • Dental care
  • Terrorism
  • Travel accidents
  • luggage
  • Cancellation of departure
  • Stolen credit cards
  • Stolen passports
  • Delayed baggage
  • Natural disasters

World Nomads can only be purchased online, the site is very intuitive, and getting travel insurance is easy, the important thing is to choose the best cover for your needs.

Let’s see how it’s done.

Go to the World Nomads site and scroll down to find the quote form.

You must first enter the country where you will go, you can choose between different options:

  • one or more countries, for example, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc.
  • a continent, example: Asia
  • Worldwide: Worldwide

You then have to indicate which is your country of residence and you can choose from more than 150 countries.

Then select your travel dates. Finally, indicate the number of travelers by entering the age of each. Click on request a quote and choose the insurance plan you prefer (Standard or Explorer).

Before making the purchase, you can add insurance coverage for extreme sports and valuables, let’s see how to do it better.

Insure valuables

In the event of theft, World Nomads also insures electronic devices up to a limit of €350 in the Standard package and €500 in the Explorer package: for the latter, there is also a refund in the event of theft of cash up to €200.

However, it is possible to extend the insurance to high-value items, be it sports equipment, electronics, or personal effects.

With the extension of the standard version, you cover each object with a limit of 1,500 €500 for all objects and 2,500 € for the single. While the Explorer plan has a maximum limit of €900 in total and €900 for the single item.

Remember, when making a claim, you will need to provide receipts showing the purchase price of each value-insured item.

Like many insurance companies, World Nomads also sets some limits to be respected to be reimbursed in the event of theft or loss of luggage and personal items, so I invite you to carefully read all the general conditions present on the site.

Extreme Sports and Activities Coverage

Unlike most policies, World Nomads covers a multitude of sports and activities. You can easily see which are covered, which require a premium, and which are not insured at all.

On the Customize your policy screen, scroll down to “Make sure you’re covered for all your adventures”. Here, you just need to search for the sport or activity you are interested in and see if it is covered and if it is included in the plan.

For example, if you type “Boxing”, you see that this sport is not covered.

If on the other hand, you choose “snorkeling”, know that it is covered and that it is included in the price, because the price does not increase. Instead, try selecting “Ice Climbing: up to 6000m” and as you can see an additional cost is added for ” Premium Sports & Activities “.

After looking at the basics you need to know to quote World Nomads and get the best coverage, let’s go over the most important details to consider.

Reimbursement or advance of medical expenses

In general, the costs are only anticipated in the event of hospitalization. For non-emergency and low-cost situations, it is necessary to advance the money and then file a complaint.

In any case, before incurring any expense, it is advisable to contact Assistance.

It is also important to know that previous illnesses are excluded.

Public liability

Another point in favor of World Nomads is the third-party damage cover. Again, contact the emergency assistance team immediately for approval before incurring any expenses. There are still some limitations and I invite you to carefully read all the conditions to obtain a refund. Find everything in the policy conditions in section 7 that is covered:

A deductible of €70 is applied for each reimbursement request, which will then be deducted from the total amount.

Please note: for medical transport by air ambulance in Nepal, the deductible is €625.

The World Nomads emergency helpline is multilingual, but complaints staff are only available in English or Danish. The customer support service, on the other hand, is only in English.

Requesting a refund is very simple, you can do it directly online by logging into your control panel.

Once logged into the site, select the policy and press the “make a complaint” button.

At this point, follow the instructions and explain in detail what happened, list each expense, and attach all receipts and invoices.

You will need to provide your bank details to receive payment directly to your account.

I recommend making a claim as soon as possible, as it is possible to request a refund even during the trip.

Now let’s see all the benefits of World Nomads:

  • 24-hour support
  • Conclusion and changes to the policy during the trip
  • Coverage for most sports
  • Coverage while volunteering, studying, or working
  • Trip cancellation
  • Theft of luggage and personal items
  • Cover against theft of documents
  • Extension Reimbursement of valuables
  • Possibility of stipulation for citizens of more than 150 countries of residence

During our 4 monthly trips to Asia, we relied on Word Nomads; I have to say luckily we didn’t need to use it. However, I have met other digital nomads who live year-round on the road and have received the refund without any issues.

As with all insurance, however, it is essential to read all the conditions and follow all the instructions during the claim phase to obtain a refund as soon as possible.

In general, I think World Nomads is reliable and I’m sure I’ll use it for future long-term trips as well.

We conclude by renewing the importance of leaving with the best travel insurance. I remain of the opinion that for one-way trips or adventurous travelers, World Nomads is the best solution.

Let me know if you have had any experiences with this travel insurance company and how it went.
