1) Duolingo

As we mentioned above, Duolingo is one of the most popular free language-learning apps on Android and iOS. You can use it to learn up to 23 different languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Italian. This app offers a mix of lessons that include translating sentences from English to other languages and reading in those same languages. It features bite-sized lessons (meaning they’re short) that you can work through each day – which makes it perfect for those on a tight schedule. The app also has some fun elements built into it, such as gamification, so you can earn points as you go along. The best part? All of its content is available completely for free. There are no hidden fees or costs associated with using Duolingo, which makes it an attractive option if money is tight but your desire to learn a new language remains strong.

2) Busuu

Busuu is a free language-learning service that offers mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. It also offers web apps for Windows and Mac computers. Busuu has been around since 2006, but only recently has it started to take off in popularity with foreign language learners from all over the world. As you’d expect from a popular app like Duolingo, there are many reviews and ratings available about Busuu on various sites online. The most common complaint among users seems to be an issue with technical support. Although Busuu does offer email support, it’s not very helpful at times due to its automated responses. Despite these issues, many people still use Busuu because of its extensive library of lessons and quality audio clips (which are essential when learning a new language). For those who want to learn French or Spanish as quickly as possible, Busuu is worth checking out.

3) HelloTalk

HelloTalk allows you to talk with native speakers from around the world. It’s a fantastic way to improve your language skills, particularly in terms of speed and pronunciation. As it’s one-on-one conversation, there’s no crowd or other distractions – just you and another language learner, who’s presumably at roughly your level of fluency. The app makes use of a special textbox interface that allows you to type in English as well as read messages back in your target language. It also has a built-in camera feature so you can see one another when talking via video chat. At present HelloTalk is only available for Android users, but they plan on launching an iOS version soon.

4) MyLanguageExchange

If you’re looking to practice your English, MyLanguageExchange is a great site. It works similarly to other language exchanges in that it lets you find native speakers who want to improve their English skills by practicing with someone else. For example, if you speak English but need to learn French, you can sign up and find native French speakers willing to have conversations with you online (or in person). Alternatively, if you speak both languages fluently and are looking for practice in one of them, just type French or English into the search bar at MyLanguageExchange. You can also organize conversations with friends through Skype or Google Hangouts for added convenience.

5) Bliu Bliu

Bliu Bliu offers free lessons in 15 languages that you can use on your computer or mobile device. The site also has a paid option with more language lessons, but even its basic plan is still quite affordable, at $10 per month. You may also be interested in Duolingo, which is one of our favorite overall language-learning sites; it’s one of Time Magazine’s 25 best websites and best apps for 2013. But it does cost money to use. If you want to try out some other free tools for learning languages (including ones that work well offline), we’ve got a guide for that too.

6) Babbel App

Duolingo is great, but if you’re looking for a more customizable experience that allows you to pick up exactly where you left off, Babbel’s app may be just what you’re looking for. You can use it on all your devices and it even offers video content as well as interactive exercises. That’s right—the days of boring grammar drills are over. This platform takes advantage of things like humor and repetition to make learning language an engaging (and fun!) process. The only drawback is that there are only online courses in a few languages, so check them out and see if they’ve got what you need.

7) Lingbe

Lingbe is a unique language learning app that focuses on one thing: allowing users to build their conversational ability. Lingbe starts you off with a few conversations, like ordering at a restaurant or finding out if your friend likes you back. From there, it’s up to you to practice and learn as much as possible about Spanish, English and Pashto Language . By putting all its eggs in one basket (conversation), Lingbe allows itself to focus entirely on that aspect of language learning, making it one of my top free sites for language-learners today. I highly recommend checking it out; it’s worth downloading immediately.

8) One Minute Languages

One Minute Languages is a useful website that allows you to learn a new language in as little as one minute. You can choose from over 50 languages and start using flashcards right away. The site is especially useful for non-native speakers who are just beginning to learn a new language, and it’s free to use! (But donations are always welcome!)
